The Power of Precision: How Windswept Wins Deals with ComboCurve

February 4, 2025

In January 2025, Windswept Royalties, LLC, a subsidiary of Windswept Capital, LLC, leveraged ComboCurve to efficiently evaluate and acquire a $4.5MM mineral position in the Northern Midland Basin.

Focusing on integrating detailed geological and reservoir engineering insights, Windswept has effectively implemented ComboCurve to enhance its asset evaluation process and expand its footprint in the mineral space. Taryn MacIntyre emphasizes that ComboCurve’s ability to consolidate multiple legacy tools into a unified platform has eliminated inefficiencies, accelerated workflows, and empowered Windswept to make faster, more confident mineral acquisition decisions.

“That’s where ComboCurve came in as a big piece for us – we want to make sure that we’re going through all the processes and doing our due diligence. We’re looking at the reservoir, the geology, the performance, operators and the basin.” – Taryn MacIntyre, Petroleum Engineer, Windswept Royalties LLC

Taryn MacIntyre, a seasoned Reservoir Engineer who has been with Windswept for almost 2 years, plays a key role in steering the company’s technical evaluations, ensuring that each decision is underpinned by solid data and comprehensive analysis.

“I came from the operator side. Transitioning into minerals, I had to get used to not having control over the development time horizon, which creates a lot of risk. When you compound that with the inherent commodity price volatility, it’s critical that you have the right tools at your disposal to be able to quantify those risks.” Taryn explains.

Taryn was already familiar with ComboCurve and recognized its value before joining Windswept. Once she joined the Windswept team, she championed the integration of ComboCurve into their workflow and it has been a key part of their ability to grow the Windswept platform and expand the size and complexity of the mineral opportunities they analyze for possible acquisition.

Challenges Before ComboCurve: Inefficient Workflows

  • Reliance on single-well forecasts and Excel modeling resulted in lack of efficiency needed to scale for company growth
  • Utilizing “quick look” tools without the ability to drill down into the data and analysis, such as how operator specific well parameters affected well performance across sub-plays
  • Cumbersome process to generate complex analysis across multiple assets/tracts and sensitivity analysis

ComboCurve: The Missing Piece

Taryn reviewed various platforms before landing on ComboCurve, particularly for its ability to manage existing mineral assets and evaluate potential acquisition opportunities.

ComboCurve converged the functionality of other industry tools and legacy systems and facilitated a simplified integration between platforms. This compatibility was key for Windswept, which also manages a sizeable legacy mineral portfolio:

“You still get the elements of what you like, what you know, and what you expect from any other forecasting software. But it’s in a comprehensive and easier-to-use tool.” – Taryn MacIntyre, Petroleum Engineer, Windswept Royalties LLC

From Excel to Efficiency Gains: Agility on a Compact Team

Agility is key for a lean operation like Windswept, “When we’re looking at a deal, we don’t have a large multi-disciplinary team. It’s extremely beneficial to jump in and import the data and utilize modules such as auto forecasting to save time,” she explains.

“The efficiency that we gain is so critical. With the utilization of the auto forecast tool, I can quickly determine what needs further refinement and allocate my time more effectively across other areas of our analysis. We can spend time focused on undeveloped locations and building out type curves and timing assumptions etc. and gain a better understanding of the assets that we’re evaluating.”

ComboCurve has allowed Windswept to streamline investment analysis, improve efficiency, and speed up sensitivity analysis to support investment decisions.

  1. Cloud-Based Efficiency & Scenario Management
Evaluation times have been reduced from days to hours. Windswept leverages ComboCurve’s cloud-based capabilities to streamline their reporting and analysis processes. The ability to run multiple combinations allows our team to efficiently analyze opportunities and sensitivity scenarios. “We can handle multiple scenarios without repeated setups. Even if I run complex combinations, it’s quick to adjust and rerun without overloading our systems.”
  2. Data Integration and Exporting
ComboCurve supports effective data consolidation and provides options for exporting data to other platforms for additional analysis. “The great thing about ComboCurve is that you can really start to marry all of your data. Then, I can export to a data visualization tool and refine the analysis. A lot of the fluidity that I appreciate from everything that’s built within ComboCurve works with all the templates and the dashboards that I’ve built for a truly comprehensive view.”
  3. Confidence in the technical capabilities of ComboCurve
ComboCurve has been built by reservoir engineers to empower everyone to review historical production performance, generate type curves, and make key investment decisions. Taryn has confidence in the rigorous technical capabilities the tool provides her team.
  4. User-Friendly Interface
Spending more time evaluating deals and less time on how to use a platform has been a big plus for Taryn’s team. “Once you stand ComboCurve up and understand how everything is working, you can fly through the tool, allowing you to concentrate time and effort on your analysis.” Taryn notes, highlighting the practicality of the software.

As Windswept continues to expand their acreage footprint, the agility and adaptability of ComboCurve’s platform has become central to their strategy, enabling them to quickly evaluate opportunities and leverage their competitive advantage. Additionally, ComboCurve’s high level of customer support is especially beneficial for compact teams, providing software support, learning tools, and data migration/management support throughout the process.
